We all dream of beautiful and cared for teeth, but current fast lifestyle does not make it easy to keep and enjoy snow white smile. The effects of smoking, drinking coffee, green tea and red wine are visible on our teeth as unaesthetic stains. In order to boost our smile we offer one of three methods of teeth whitening:
Tray based whitening
It is an effective method comprising of the use of specialist whitening gel, which penetrates the tooth tissue releasing oxygen atoms. The teeth are whitened through oxygenation system, so we achieve brighter smile. For better effectiveness we need to prepare for whitening. During the initial visit the dentist examines the teeth (their colour) and gums, and if need be, cavities are filled and plaque removed. The next visit is trying on the plastic guards for the lower and upper teeth and supplying the Patient with the whitening gel. The guards (trays) are made at the laboratory by casting a model of the Patient’s teeth during the first visit.
The next stage of teeth whitening takes place at home. The Patient puts on and wears the gel-filled trays for around 6-8 hours. Total whitening time is 8-14 days, but the results might be visible after the first day. If the teeth are particularly dark or stained the whitening time may extend.
We should bear in mind that prosthetic fillings (e.g. crowns, bridges or veneers) will not be whitened. That is why after teeth whitening process darker fillings should be replaced with new ones matching the new colour in the Patient’s oral cavity. The new colour stabilises for about two weeks, so during this time we should be on “milk diet”, when we consume food without colorants not to destroy the brightened smile effect. After this time a check-up visit is recommended. The durability of teeth whitening with the guards system lasts around 2-3 years. After this time when the teeth get slightly darker (coffee, tea, tobacco) the Patient may buy new gel and reuse the trays to refresh the whitening effect.
When after the teeth whitening we experience temporary hyper sensitivity to heat, we may use specialist products and pastes suggested or applied by a hygienist at our Clinic to successfully solve the problem.
Teeth whitening with BEYOND light
It is a fast method (takes one visit) with the Beaming White system using cold light (wavelength 480-520 nm) in the Beyond light accelerator. Through light filtration technology the light is filtered through fibre optic lightening (infrared and ultraviolet light is filtered) so the teeth whitening is completely safe. The cold light activates special gel applied on upper and lower teeth, which in a natural way removes stains. The low temperature of the device does not irritate teeth and their nerves, and the results (there are even 5 shades of darkness reduction in VITA shade system) last up to 3 years.
Beaming White system is successful even in case of difficult stains resulting form the use of tetracyclines, fluoride or other teeth staining medications.
The whitening process starts with assessing the shade by the dentist VITA shade guide and similarly to tray based whitening with examining the teeth and gums. If need be a hygienist carries out necessary dental cleaning (scaling or sanding) and protects existing cavities. The next visit is the very whitening itself and it comprises of application of proper protection layer onto the gums (so called liquid cofferdam) and the specialist whitening gel on the upper and lower teeth.
During two-, three whitening sessions (one session takes approximately 15-20 min) the Patient may relax by the Beyond light, which activates the hydrogen peroxide whitening all stains on teeth. After this time the treatment is over and the dentist assesses the new brighter shade of upper and lower teeth and explains how to maintain the whitening effect for long.
Tooth whitening with BTL Litemedics laser
Laser tooth whitening is a state of the art treatment enhancing brightness of your smile. Its main advantage is short time of the therapy and durability of results. One half-an-hour appointment is enough to lighten teeth by several shades and the results last even for more than two years.
At first sight laser whitening procedure is quite similar to using tooth whitening lamps. Dentist applies on teeth a gel containing 30 percent hydrogen peroxide which is activated by a laser beam directed at teeth. Released particles penetrate colour changes and the outcome of the process is decomposition of pigments which are the reason of unpleasant discoloration. Another advantage of laser whitening is minimising after treatment sensitivity of teeth. Laser beam activates gel straight away – it does not remain on teeth for long and does not irritate surrounding soft tissues.
Whitening necrotic tooth (after Root Canal Treatment)
It is necessary to consult the dentist before treatment as well as taking an X-ray to confirm that the tooth root is properly filled, i.e. to the root apex (tip) and if it is not inflamed.
If there are no concerns about the endodontics treatment, the filling material is removed form the crown of the tooth and it is replaced with an agent oxidizing the tooth
tissue thus boosting the whitening process.
The whitening agent must be replaced with a new one every few days.
The number of visits depends on the level of discoloration of the tooth but the total time of the process should not be longer than two weeks. When the desired result is achieved, the bleaching agent is removed and replaced with light curing material or veneer (composite, porcelain).
Immediately after the treatment the whitened tooth is slightly brighter the other teeth but within several days the colour stabilises and adjusts to the rest of teeth.
If a Patient wants to whiten all dentition, including necrotic teeth, we recommend starting with the necrotic teeth and later whitening the rest.
Some kinds of discolouring, such as impaired development of the tooth or after antibiotic therapy are not always whitened. In such cases it is necessary to carry out prosthetic treatment such as veneers or prosthetic crowns (porcelain, zirconium).
