Modern stomatology brings a broad range various medical solutions, even when Your denture is incomplete. Prosthodontics focuses on dental prostheses and restoring proper functioning of the masticatory apparatus and finally helping a beautiful smile come out of the hiding place. Contrary to what one might expect the problem does not have to refer to seniors but to people of all ages.

Our Clinic offers modern solutions, which almost cannot be told apart form natural dentition. Apart form teeth replacement, there are many other prosthetic solutions or cosmetic restorations of broken or destroyed teeth crowns, reshaping them and changing their size as well as correcting permanent discolorations. Choosing a proper method is not easy at all. Before choosing any solution there have to be certain factors taken into consideration. During consultation the dentist examines conditions in the oral cavity of a Patient considering first of all the number of missing teeth, the quality of the remaining teeth, the state of bones, gums and mucosa, as well as the Patient’s age, preferences and financial plans. In order to ensure the most satisfying treatment for our Patients, our specialists work in cooperation, which means that prosthodontic treatment is very often combined with surgical, endodontic, orthodontic and periodontal treatment.

Our Clinic offers a range of prosthodontic solutions both removable and permanent. In order to rebuild hard missing tissue of the tooth we may apply, e.g.:

  • Porcelain inlays, onlays, overlays – these are reconstruction methods in case of big caves of cheek teeth. These porcelain or composite resin pieces are bonded to the tooth without grinding but only with minimal preparation of the shape of the missing fragment. The procedure takes two visits. During the first visit an impression of the tooth is taken and send to a technician lab to make it. During the second visit the dentist checks if the inlay fits and later it is bonded to the tooth. Porcelain and composite resin inlays substantially strengthen the tooth structure – approximately 70% and this way the tooth lifetime extends up to 10 years. In comparison to traditional light cure fillings inlays are characterized by high precision of making, and moreover, it is possible to reconstruct contact points and restoring anatomic shape of the tooth. According to the preparation extent we refer to: inlays – when masticatory surface is restored or onlays and overlays when to reconstruction area is very big, e.g. in cheek teeth after root canal treatment. Thanks to inlays we keep the remaining healthy parts of tissues with minimal preparation.

  • Porcelain crown fused on metal - the most popular solution because of the price and because of the durability. It is a long lasting restoration fitting over the tooth, both live and necrotic, which were properly prepared. It is used most commonly for severely damaged teeth, whose reconstruction with composite would not be strong enough or possible. For some Patients this solution is not entirely aesthetically satisfying because in different light the metal construction may change the tooth colour (a small amount of metal is seen at the edge of the crown).

  • Zirconium crowns – are made of zirconium oxide (no metal is used) and they are used for both front and cheek teeth as they look more naturally than porcelain fused on metal crowns. The porcelain is sintered onto the zirconium cover in the colour matching the Patient’s teeth colour. Because of the lack of metal base or any amount of metal seen at the edge of the crown zirconium crowns allow the light to pass as a natural tooth. Zirconium crowns are recommended for discoloured teeth, damaged teeth and occlusally overburdened teeth. Rotated, retracted or flared teeth are also ground for correction and prepared. Having zirconium crowns or bridges made they considerably improve the smile of even the most demanding Patients, who greatly appreciate the beauty and health of their dentition.

  • Full ceramic veneers – they are the best and at the same time the most durable prosthetic solution, which minimal invasion with maximal cosmetic result. Before making veneers the dentist consults the Patient on their expectations of the shape, colour and size of the teeth. Veneers are also helpful for the Patients with a diastema – a space or a gap between the two teeth (most commonly between upper incisors). Moreover, they are the least invasive method of front teeth reconstruction. Before we start working on them, we very often prepare models of veneer makeover, so a called wax-up, later there is a possibility to try out the newly created shapes (so called mock up) and possible adjustments and alterations (length, shape or teeth angle). After this visit the dentist gently grinds the labial or buccal (outer) surface of the tooth within the enamel – approximately 0.5 mm deep. The following stage is preparation of the veneer by the technician and then fixing it ideally with specially chosen composite cement to match the shade of the remaining teeth. Temporary veneers are placed at the time when the Patient waits for permanent veneers. Ceramic veneers are very durable and their shape and shade do not change for many years.

  • Crown and root inlay(gold or titanium alloy) they mainly used to strengthen the teeth after endodontic (root canal) treatment, when the teeth are more prone to cracking and chipping. In order to strengthen the necrotic tooth the dentist fixes and inlay and then reconstructs the crown with gold or zirconium alloy.

In the cases of many missing teeth, when it is impossible to use permanent restorations (porcelain or zirconium bridges and implants) we may opt for partial dentures, such as:

  • Acrylic dentures - acrylic dentures are a common solution in cases of partially missing teeth and for edentulous Patients, for the jaw and mandible and they consist of the denture teeth attached to an acrylic base plate. Unfortunately this solution is not the best for mucosa and residual alveolar ridge, because the chewing forces are transferred through the base plate onto residua alveolar ridge and its mucosa gradually causing pain and alveolar bone atrophy in the jaw and mandible.

  • (Cobalt, chrome) frame prostheses - they are very durable and strong partial dentures. There dentures have a metal base plate or framework that ideally sits on and around the natural teeth of the Patient onto which denture teeth are attached. The metal framework additionally have metal clasps, gripping masticatory surfaces of teeth. They are stable and do not stick to gums as all the chewing forces are transferred onto the pillar teeth and not on the gums or alveolar ridge bone of the jaw or mandible, which might cause discomfort or pain. The Patients who choose this solution do not have to have their teeth ground. Those advantages of frame prostheses make them one of the most popular solutions in prosthetic treatment.

  • „Combo” prosthesis – it is a framework prosthesis in combination with nylon prosthesis. Part of the metal elements in the framework is replaced with nylon material – bioplast. Metal is left only in less visible teeth and on the gums. This prosthesis combines all the advantages of metal framework prosthesis and aesthetics of nylon prosthesis.

  • Acetate (Valplast) prostheses - they are one of the most up to date solutions in stomatological prosthodontics. They are much more flexible than traditional prostheses, offering the Patient bigger comfort of use. They fit in the mouth very well and because there are no metal clasps, so they look more naturally.

To restore single teeth or more missing teeth and in cases of missing back teeth, for the Patients who want to avoid partial dentures, we offer one of the following solutions:

  • Porcelain bridges – they are made of crowns covering prepared earlier natural teeth or on implants, joined by bridges (artificial teeth) replacing missing teeth. A porcelain fixed bridge is suitable to replace one a couple of missing teeth, as long as they are supported by at least two pillar teeth. They are very comfortable solutions for the Patient and their durability (which depends on the material they are made of) is a few to several years. Moreover porcelain and zirconium bridges keep their shape and shade for many years.

  • Implants – this is the best solution in case of a single tooth missing. For the front teeth we mostly offer zirconium crown on an implant put on a zirconia abutment, and for the back teeth we use titanium abutments and zirconia crowns on metal. This solution is also recommended for edentulous jaw or mandible. Implants stabilise removable dentures improving quality of life (read more at Implantology).

Furthermore, at our Clinic we offer dental (night) guards that are becoming more and more popular. Professionally made, transparent guide designed for the Patients with excessive nerve-muscle tension. The guard is used for prophylaxis as well as for teeth grinding and bruxists. The guard reduces the muscle tension and allows to avoid pain in the jaws as well as headaches. It improves the quality of sleep and muscle relaxation.
